To stream videos from an Ubuntu server to Meta Quest, share the media folders through Samba, then add the server to [NEX](https://www.meta.com/experiences/nex-next-gen-video-player/25092971956976708/) with its IP address and Samba credentials. NEX is a 2D and 3D video player for Meta Quest with support for manually added SMB servers.

This also works when Ubuntu runs CasaOS or Jellyfin in Docker. Samba and Jellyfin can read the same folders, so you do not need to move the files, duplicate the library, or copy videos to the headset.

## Use one SMB server for several hard drives

An Ubuntu server can publish each mounted folder as a separate SMB share:

| Folder on Ubuntu | SMB share shown in NEX |
| ---------------- | ---------------------- |
| `/mnt/Movies`    | `Movies`               |
| `/mnt/3D-Movies` | `3D-Movies`            |
| `/mnt/Serien`    | `Serien`               |

You only add the Ubuntu server to NEX once. After signing in, NEX can display every share that the Samba account is allowed to read.

Jellyfin can continue using the same folders through its Docker volume mappings. Docker volumes give Jellyfin access to the files; Samba makes those files available to NEX over the network.

## Prepare the SMB shares on Ubuntu

Before opening NEX, make sure that:

1. All media drives are mounted in Ubuntu.
2. Samba is installed and each media folder has its own share.
3. A Samba account has permission to read all three folders.
4. The Samba configuration has been checked and the service restarted.

For video playback, read-only shares are normally sufficient. The Samba username and password are separate from the Jellyfin login.

Ubuntu's [Samba file-server guide](https://documentation.ubuntu.com/server/how-to/samba/file-server/index.html) explains how to install Samba and add multiple share sections. If CasaOS already manages file sharing, use its sharing interface or confirm that manual changes will not be overwritten.

## Add the Ubuntu server to NEX

Use the Ubuntu server's local IP address when both devices are on the same home network. In NEX:

1. Open the SMB section and select the `+` button in the upper-right corner.
2. Enter the Ubuntu server's IP address.
3. Enter `mediauser` and the password created with `smbpasswd`.
4. Connect and open `Movies`, `3D-Movies`, or `Serien`.

After connecting, NEX should show `Movies`, `3D-Movies`, and `Serien` under the same server. If one is missing, check that share's path and account permissions rather than adding the server again.

## Connect through Tailscale

If the Ubuntu server and Meta Quest are already connected to the same tailnet, enter the server's Tailscale IP in NEX instead of its local IP. Use the same Samba username and password.

The Ubuntu firewall and tailnet policy must allow the Quest to reach TCP port 445 through Tailscale. Do not forward port 445 on the router or expose SMB directly to the public internet. Tailscale's [file-server guide](https://tailscale.com/docs/use-cases/personal-or-at-home-use/access-nas-media-file-servers) recommends connecting through the server's Tailscale hostname or IP without public port forwarding.

High-bitrate 3D or VR videos may still buffer if the connection is relayed or the server's upload speed is limited. Test the same file on the local network before changing the Samba setup.

If the server is not discovered automatically, manual IP entry avoids relying on DLNA discovery. If the login fails, confirm that you are using the Samba account rather than the Jellyfin account. NEX also supports WebDAV, but that requires a separate WebDAV service; for this existing folder structure, SMB is the simpler option.

How to Stream Videos from an Ubuntu Server to Meta Quest via SMB

When you look through old videos, have you ever wondered what it would feel like to watch them again in 3D?

It might be your dog running excitedly toward you, your child wobbling through their first bike ride, or a clip of Times Square from a trip to New York. A little more spatial depth can make familiar footage feel different.

If you have a Mac and Meta Quest, you can use [NEX](https://www.meta.com/experiences/nex-next-gen-video-player/25092971956976708/) to turn regular 2D videos into 3D.

Install the free [NEX Link](https://nexplayer.net/en/nex-link) app on your Mac. Once conversion is complete, you can watch the video directly in NEX on Meta Quest without manually transferring it.

## What does your Mac need?

NEX Link currently requires the following for 3D video conversion on Mac:

- **Chip:** Apple silicon (M-series)
- **System:** macOS 15 Sequoia or later

Make sure the latest NEX Link is installed on your Mac and the latest NEX is installed on Meta Quest. Both devices must be connected to the same local network and able to communicate with each other.

## How to convert a 2D video to 3D

It takes four steps:

1. Visit the [NEX Link website](https://nexplayer.net/en/nex-link), then download and install the Mac version.
2. Open NEX Link and add the video or folder you want to convert.
3. Right-click the video in the library and select **Trans to 3D**.
4. Open the **Task** page to check the conversion progress.

Conversion time depends on the video's length and resolution as well as your Mac's performance. For your first try, start with a short clip.

## How to watch it on Meta Quest

Once conversion is complete, put on Meta Quest and open NEX:

1. Select **NEX Link** from the main menu and connect to your Mac.
2. Find the converted video and play it. NEX will automatically open the corresponding 3D version.

Want to compare the result with the original? Open the playback controls and select **2D** under **3D & Panorama** to switch back.

Results vary by video. Footage with moving subjects, forward camera movement, and clear separation between foreground and background often shows more noticeable 3D depth.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does NEX Link say my Mac is not supported?

Open **About This Mac** and confirm that your Mac has an M-series chip and runs macOS 15 or later. If it meets both requirements, update NEX Link and restart the app.

### Can I export the converted 3D video?

Not currently. Converted results can only be played through NEX on Meta Quest and cannot be exported as standalone video files.

To free up storage, delete a converted result under **NEX Link → Task → Completed**. Removing the original video from the library will also remove its corresponding 3D version.

### Do I need to copy the video to Meta Quest?

No. The video stays on your Mac and can be watched in the headset through NEX Link. Keep both devices on the same reachable local network and leave NEX Link running.

## YouTube example: search and play a video

After you select **YouTube**, NEX opens a small browsing panel. Search for a favorite creator, music video, concert, gaming video, or travel channel, then select a video to start watching.

Once playback begins, click anywhere outside the panel to hide it and bring the video back into focus. You stay inside NEX throughout, and it is easy to bring the panel back when you want another video.

## How do other streaming services work?

Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, and Prime Video work in much the same way: choose the service under **Browser**, sign in and find something to watch in the small panel, then click outside the panel to hide the controls after playback starts.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need a streaming account to use the NEX browser?

It depends on the service. Some YouTube videos are available without signing in. Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, and Prime Video generally require an account, and some content requires an active subscription.

### Why is a service missing or a video not playing?

First, make sure NEX is up to date. Then check your network connection, account, and subscription. Service shortcuts, catalogs, and playback compatibility can vary by country or region, platform policy, and future updates.

## Why use Firefox?

Netflix uses content protection. With some browser and system combinations, the Windows desktop streams normally while the protected video area appears black. If this happens in Chrome, try the latest Firefox as a compatibility test. Firefox does not bypass content protection and cannot guarantee playback for every device, region, or title. See [Netflix's Windows browser requirements](https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23931) for current support.

## What you need

- Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, or Meta Quest 3S;
- a Windows PC with an **NVIDIA GPU**;
- **NEX 1.2.2.0 or later** and the latest NEX Link;
- the latest Firefox and an active Netflix account and subscription;
- the PC and Meta Quest on the same stable local network.

The PC desktop streaming method in this guide currently requires an NVIDIA GPU. AMD GPU users can still use AI 3D with video files they own inside NEX, but not this Netflix streaming workflow.

## How to stream Netflix to Meta Quest

1. Open [Netflix](https://www.netflix.com/) in Firefox on your Windows PC, sign in, and start a video.
2. Launch the latest **NEX Link** and keep it running.
3. Confirm that the PC and Meta Quest are on the same local network.
4. Open NEX on the headset, enter **NEX Link**, select the PC, and start PC desktop streaming.

Before enabling 3D, check that the Windows desktop, Netflix video, and audio all appear correctly.

## How to enable real-time 3D in NEX

Once Netflix is visible through PC desktop streaming, enable real-time 3D in NEX. Videos with clear separation between foreground and background and relatively steady shots usually show depth more clearly than very dark or rapidly edited scenes.

## How to fix a black screen when streaming Netflix

- Confirm that Netflix plays normally on the PC;
- switch from Chrome to the latest Firefox and refresh the page;
- update Firefox, NEX, NEX Link, and the GPU driver;
- allow NEX Link through Windows Firewall on the local network;
- close screen recorders or remote-desktop software that may use desktop capture.

If Firefox still shows a black screen, do not disable or modify content-protection settings. Use a viewing method officially supported by Netflix instead.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why can't NEX Link find my Quest 2?

Update NEX and NEX Link, keep both running, and make sure the PC and Quest 2 can reach each other on the same local network. Also check Windows Firewall. A VPN, guest network, or security software may block device discovery.

### Why does real-time 3D look subtle?

The effect varies with the picture. Test a familiar scene with clear foreground-background separation and steady camera movement, then compare it before and after enabling 3D. For more settings, see the [NEX 2D-to-3D and real-time 3D guide](./nex-vr-player-3d-guide-turn-2d-videos-into-real-time-3d-on-meta-quest-3).

> **Regional availability and compatibility:** Netflix availability, catalogs, plans, quality, and playback behavior vary by country or region and may change with platform, browser, or content-protection updates. A VPN or proxy may affect sign-in and the visible catalog. This method is not guaranteed for every account, title, or PC configuration. Only watch content you are authorized to access and follow Netflix's terms and local law.

How to Watch Netflix in 3D on Meta Quest with NEX Link

# NEX VR Player 3D Guide: Turn 2D Videos into Real-Time 3D on Meta Quest 3

When you revisit a favorite movie, a familiar music video, or one of your own home videos on the weekend, you may wonder what it would feel like if the people were no longer flat against the screen and had real distance from the background. Everyday clips—your child riding a bike for the first time, your family chatting in the yard, or your dog running toward the camera—can feel a little like stepping back into the memory when viewed in 3D.

That is exactly where the real-time 3D features in [NEX](https://www.meta.com/experiences/nex-next-gen-video-player/25092971956976708/) come in. NEX is a 2D and 3D video player for Meta Quest that can add spatial depth to regular 2D footage during playback. If the content is running on your computer, its companion desktop app, [NEX Link](https://nexplayer.net/), can stream your PC desktop to the headset so you can enable real-time 3D there as well.

These are actually two different workflows. One processes a video playing directly in NEX, while the other processes the desktop image streamed from your computer. This NEX VR Player 3D guide explains both options and when to use each one.

> **Before you begin:** Update NEX on your Meta Quest to **version 1.2.2.0 or later**. If you plan to stream your computer desktop, install and run the latest version of NEX Link as well.

![A puppy stepping out of a cinema screen to show a home video in real-time 3D](https://cms.moonvrplayer.com/uploads/family_video_puppy_pop_out_3d_744b1b6d7c.png)

## What Are the Two Real-Time 3D Options in NEX VR Player?

Before you start, check where your content is coming from:

- **The video is playing directly in NEX:** Use **AI 3D**.
- **The content is running on a Windows PC:** Use **NEX Link, PC desktop streaming, and real-time 3D**.

If you simply want to watch a movie file that is ready to play, the first option is more direct. If you want to bring a game, browser video, or another computer app into Meta Quest 3, use the second option.

## Method 1: Turn a Regular 2D Video into AI 3D on Meta Quest 3

This is the simplest method. Once the video is open in NEX, you can enable AI 3D without streaming your computer desktop or running NEX Link.

1. Open **NEX version 1.2.2.0 or later**.
2. Play a regular 2D video in NEX.
3. Bring up the playback controls and select the square icon in the bottom-right corner.
4. Select **AI 3D**.

NEX analyzes the picture and generates depth while the video is playing, but it does not permanently convert the original file into a separate 3D video. When you turn off AI 3D, the original video remains unchanged.

For your first try, choose something you already know well. Alongside movies and music videos, your own home videos are especially good material: a child walking toward the camera, a pet running in from across the room, or family members standing at different distances. These shots already have clear foreground and background relationships, so AI 3D makes the spatial separation between people, pets, and the background easier to notice. Because you know the footage, you will not have to stare at an unfamiliar clip and wonder whether the effect is working.

![A Meta Quest user watching a home video of a puppy stepping out of a laptop screen](https://cms.moonvrplayer.com/uploads/cover_nex_family_video_3d_28ad0cb692.png)

## Method 2: Stream Your PC Desktop with NEX Link and Enable Real-Time 3D

Sometimes your content is not a video file you can open directly. It may be running in a computer browser, a game, or another desktop app. In that case, NEX Link can bring your entire PC desktop into the headset and apply real-time 3D to the streamed image.

1. Install and launch the latest version of **NEX Link** on your Windows PC, and keep it running.
2. Make sure your computer and Meta Quest are connected to the same network.
3. Open NEX in the headset, enter **NEX Link**, and connect to your computer.
4. Start **PC desktop streaming**.
5. Enable **real-time 3D** in NEX.

Once connected, the view in Meta Quest changes as you switch windows, play a video, or enter a game on your computer. It is more like moving your computer screen into NEX than converting and saving a new file first.

At present, PC desktop streaming requires a Windows PC with an **NVIDIA GPU**. If your computer uses an AMD GPU, you can still use the first method: play a regular 2D video directly in NEX and enable AI 3D.

## Should You Use AI 3D or NEX Link Real-Time 3D?

| | AI 3D in NEX | NEX Link PC desktop streaming |
| ----------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- |
| Content source | A regular 2D video playing directly in NEX | The desktop currently shown on a Windows PC |
| NEX Link required             | No                                                              | Yes                                          |
| PC desktop streaming required | No | Yes |
| Current PC GPU requirement | Not affected by the NVIDIA requirement for PC desktop streaming | NVIDIA GPU required |
| Best for | Movies, music videos, and other video files | Browser video, games, and other desktop apps |

The easiest way to remember it is: **If the video file plays directly in NEX, choose AI 3D. If you want to bring your current computer screen into Meta Quest 3, choose NEX Link.**

## What If AI 3D Is Missing or NEX Cannot Find Your Computer?

If you do not see the AI 3D option, first make sure NEX is updated to version 1.2.2.0 or later and that you are playing a regular 2D video. Then reopen the playback controls and check the options under the square icon in the bottom-right corner.

If NEX cannot find your computer, check the following:

- NEX Link is open and running.
- Your Windows PC and Meta Quest are on the same local network.
- Windows Firewall allows NEX Link to access the current network.
- A VPN, guest network, or router setting is not preventing devices on the local network from discovering one another.
- NEX and NEX Link are both up to date.

If your computer has an AMD GPU, there is no need to keep troubleshooting PC desktop streaming. Under the current hardware requirements, opening the video directly in NEX and selecting AI 3D is the better option.

## Start Your First Real-Time 3D Experience with a Familiar Video

The two real-time 3D features in NEX solve different problems. AI 3D is for playing an existing video directly, while NEX Link is for streaming whatever is happening on a Windows PC into the headset. Once you know where your content is coming from, the choice is simple.

Update [NEX](https://www.meta.com/experiences/nex-next-gen-video-player/25092971956976708/) to version 1.2.2.0 or later and begin with a video you have watched many times. A familiar shot is often the best way to feel what changes when an ordinary 2D image gains a little more depth between the foreground and background.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is there little or no depth after I select 3D?

Check the source first. Native 3D video needs the correct **SBS** or **Top-Bottom** layout; swap the left and right eyes if the depth looks reversed. Selecting a 3D layout for an ordinary 2D video does not create full stereoscopic depth by itself. See the [NEX 2D-to-3D guide](./nex-vr-player-3d-guide-turn-2d-videos-into-real-time-3d-on-meta-quest-3) for the appropriate workflow.

### Do SBS or Top-Bottom movies need to be converted again?

No. Play the file directly and select the layout that matches the source. AI 3D or 2D-to-3D processing is only needed for a normal single-view 2D video.

NEX VR Player 3D Guide: Turn 2D Videos into Real-Time 3D on Meta Quest 3

# How to Watch YouTube in 3D on Meta Quest 3

Everyone has their own corner of YouTube that is hard to leave: a favorite creator with a new upload, a music video you keep coming back to, a live performance, a gaming channel, or a travel video after a long day. We usually watch all of it on a flat monitor. Bringing that familiar content into Meta Quest 3 and adding a little real-time 3D can make it feel surprisingly fresh.

Most YouTube videos are standard 2D content, but PC desktop streaming can give the picture a real-time 3D effect on Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S. [NEX](https://www.meta.com/experiences/nex-next-gen-video-player/25092971956976708/) is a video player for Meta Quest, while [NEX Link](https://nexplayer.net/) is its companion computer app. Once the two are connected, NEX Link can stream what is currently displayed on your Windows PC to the headset, and NEX can apply real-time 3D processing to that stream.

Nothing about your usual YouTube routine needs to change. You still sign in through the browser, open your subscriptions, and choose something you genuinely want to watch. NEX does not download the video or convert it into a new file; it simply brings the PC screen into your headset and adds the optional 3D effect.

> **Before you begin:** Install the latest versions of NEX on your Meta Quest and NEX Link on your Windows PC. PC desktop streaming and real-time 3D are currently confirmed for Windows only.

![Watching YouTube in 3D on Meta Quest 3 through a Windows PC and NEX](https://cms.moonvrplayer.com/uploads/cover_youtube_3d_42e441bed4.png)

## What You Need

- Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S;
- A Windows PC;
- The latest version of NEX installed on the headset;
- The latest version of NEX Link installed on the PC.

You can download the latest NEX Link from the [NEX website](https://nexplayer.net/). If you see `Waiting for plugin to start` when entering desktop streaming for the first time, open Settings in NEX Link, install or update the required 3D plugin, and try connecting again.

## Step 1: Open YouTube on Your PC

Launch NEX Link and leave it running. In your browser, open [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/). Start with something familiar: a new upload from a creator you follow, a favorite music video, or a gaming or travel video with plenty of visual depth. Familiar content makes it easier to notice the difference before and after enabling 3D.

YouTube normally works in both Firefox and Chrome, so this tutorial does not require one specific browser. If the video plays on the PC but its streamed area appears black in the headset, refresh the page or test Firefox to rule out a browser capture compatibility issue.

## Step 2: Connect Your Windows PC in NEX

Make sure your PC and Quest are connected to the same local network. Put on the headset, open the latest version of NEX, enter NEX Link, and select the computer on which NEX Link is running.

After the connection is established, open PC desktop streaming. You should now see the Windows desktop and the YouTube video in Meta Quest.

![Connecting a Windows PC in NEX on Meta Quest 3 and opening a YouTube desktop stream](https://cms.moonvrplayer.com/uploads/nex_link_youtube_streaming_fca41d7bc9.png)

## Step 3: Enable real-time 3D for YouTube

Once the desktop stream is visible, enable real-time 3D from the 3D controls in NEX. NEX analyzes the incoming 2D image and adds depth while you watch.

Real-time 3D does not mean the original video is native stereoscopic content supplied by YouTube. It is a viewing effect generated by NEX during playback, so the result can vary from one video to another. In a music video or live performance, the stage, performers, and background may feel more clearly separated. Travel footage can reveal more distance between a nearby street and the landscape beyond it. In gaming videos, the character, interface, and game world may gain a more noticeable sense of depth.

More intensity is not always better. Videos with lots of subtitles or rapid cuts may take a little time to get used to. For your first test, choose a familiar short video, increase the 3D intensity gradually, and stop where the picture feels natural and comfortable to you.

## How to Make YouTube Desktop Streaming More Stable

A few simple adjustments can help reduce interruptions:

- Use a stable home network and connect the PC and Quest to the same router;
- If playback stutters, lower the YouTube video quality first and increase it gradually;
- Pause unnecessary downloads, cloud synchronization, and other high-bandwidth tasks;
- Allow NEX Link to communicate through Windows Firewall on the current local network;
- If you use a VPN, make sure it does not block local communication between the PC and Quest;
- Keep your browser, NEX, and NEX Link up to date.

If NEX cannot find the computer, first confirm that both devices are on the same network and that NEX Link is running. If the desktop is visible but the video area is not displayed correctly, compare Firefox and Chrome to determine whether the issue is related to the network connection or browser capture.

## Experience Regular YouTube Videos with a 3D Effect on Meta Quest

With PC desktop streaming in NEX Link, you do not have to download a YouTube video or copy a file to the Quest. Whether you are catching up with a favorite creator, replaying a music video, or looking for a little more space in travel and gaming footage, anything that plays normally in a Windows browser can be brought into NEX and given added depth with real-time 3D.

Actual image quality and smoothness depend on your PC, browser, YouTube playback quality, and local network. Only watch content you are authorized to access and follow the YouTube Terms of Service.

# How to Stream Your Windows PC Screen to Meta Quest 3 and Enable Real-Time 3D

If you want to view your computer screen in Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S, you don't have to copy video files to the headset first. [NEX](https://www.meta.com/experiences/nex-next-gen-video-player/25092971956976708/) is a video player for Meta Quest; [NEX Link](https://nexplayer.net/) is its companion Windows desktop app. When connected, you can stream your Windows desktop directly to the headset, with support for real-time 3D.

This means you can watch in Quest what your computer is displaying, and enable 3D effects on demand. This article covers preparation, the basic connection process, and what to check if you can't connect.

> **Update before you start:** Make sure both NEX on your headset and NEX Link on your Windows PC are updated to the latest versions. Desktop streaming and real-time 3D are new features; older versions may lack the relevant options or fail to connect properly. At the time of release, these features correspond to NEX 1.1.0.0 and NEX Link 1.6.2. If a newer version is available on the official website, install that instead.

## What is NEX's PC Desktop Streaming?

Desktop streaming is different from playing videos from a shared folder. It transmits the current desktop screen of your computer, so you can view content from your PC directly in Meta Quest.

The new NEX also supports real-time 3D for the streamed screen, giving ordinary 2D content a more layered 3D effect while watching.

## What You Need Before Starting

- Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S;
- A Windows PC;
- The latest version of NEX installed on your headset;
- The latest version of NEX Link installed on your PC;
- Your PC and Meta Quest connected to the same local network that allows them to communicate.

You can download the latest NEX Link from the [NEX official website](https://nexplayer.net/). When using the 3D feature for the first time, if the software prompts you to install or update the 3D plugin, follow the instructions to complete it.

## How to Stream Your PC Screen to Meta Quest

### Step 1: Update and Open NEX Link

Install or update NEX Link on your Windows PC, then keep the app running. If a firewall authorization prompt appears, allow NEX Link to communicate on your local network.

NEX Link 1.6.2 improves Windows firewall authorization detection and supports manual installation and incremental updates of the 3D plugin, further refining the connection and 3D plugin setup process.

## Why Update to NEX Link 1.6.2 or Higher?

In addition to supporting NEX's PC desktop streaming, NEX Link 1.6.2 includes several improvements related to 3D functionality and connection stability:

- Faster 3D conversion on Windows;
- Improved Windows firewall authorization detection;
- Support for manual installation and incremental updates of the 3D plugin;
- Checks available disk space during plugin download and installation;
- Supports minimizing to the Windows system tray;
- Adds a more convenient user log submission entry.

For users who just want to experience desktop streaming, you don't need to study the full changelog. The most important thing is to update both NEX and NEX Link, complete firewall authorization, and install any necessary 3D plugins.

## What to Check If You Can't See Your PC

If your PC doesn't appear in NEX, check the following in order:

- Are both NEX and NEX Link updated to the latest versions?
- Is NEX Link running on your Windows PC?
- Are your PC and Quest connected to the same local network?
- Does Windows Firewall allow NEX Link to communicate?
- Are VPNs, third-party security software, or guest networks blocking device discovery?
- Has the 3D plugin been installed or updated correctly as prompted?

Public, campus, and office networks may restrict communication between devices. If both devices can access the internet but still can't discover each other, try a regular home network or another network that allows local device communication.

## Experience Real-Time 3D of Your PC Desktop in Meta Quest

NEX's new desktop streaming brings your Windows PC screen directly into Meta Quest, and real-time 3D adds depth to ordinary 2D content while watching.

Before you start, update both NEX and NEX Link to the latest versions. After completing the connection and firewall authorization, you can open your PC desktop in the headset and enable real-time 3D as needed.

How to Stream Your Windows PC Screen to Meta Quest 3 and Enable Real-Time 3D

# How to Watch 3D Movies on Meta Quest: 3 Simple Methods

Watching 3D movies on Meta Quest is not just about making the screen bigger—it's about giving the picture real depth: characters seem to stand in front of the screen, while backgrounds recede into the distance. However, your movie might already be in 3D SBS format, or it might be a regular 2D video, and the viewing methods differ.

So, this article covers the three most common ways: using NEX VR Player for conversion and playback, using Quest Gallery directly, and using Owl3D to generate exportable 3D files on your computer.

![User wearing Meta Quest watching a 3D movie with spatial depth](https://cms.moonvrplayer.com/uploads/cover_3d_movie_88690fc699.png)

## How to Choose Among the Three Methods?

| Method            | Best For                                                                      | Key Features                                                              |
| ----------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **NEX** | Those who want to minimize setup steps and watch immediately after conversion | Conversion is local, data is more secure |
| **Quest Gallery** | Those who want to try the built-in system effect first | No need to install another app, but the feature may not be rolled out yet |
| **Owl3D** | Those who want to fine-tune effects or export 3D files | More control, but more steps and storage costs |

In short, if you already have SBS or Top-Bottom content, there's no need to convert again; just open it with a player that supports the corresponding 3D layout. For regular 2D movies, choose a tool based on your needs: use NEX if you don't need to export files; try Gallery if the 3D entry is already available; use Owl3D if you need to save the converted result or fine-tune depth.

When trying for the first time, it's a good idea to test with a short clip of a few minutes to check the depth and viewing comfort before processing the entire movie.

## Before You Start: What Type of Movie Do You Have?

- If you see two side-by-side images when you open the file, it's **SBS 3D**.
- If you see two images stacked vertically, it's **Top-Bottom / Over-Under 3D**.
- If you see only one normal image, it's a regular **2D video** that needs to be converted to 3D to get the stereoscopic effect.

Native 3D content already contains left and right eye images and usually looks more natural than AI-converted content. 2D-to-3D conversion estimates depth from the picture and does not turn the movie into a VR180 or 360° video where you can look around freely.

## Method 1: Convert and Watch with NEX—The Most Comprehensive

[NEX VR Player](https://www.meta.com/experiences/nex-next-gen-video-player/25092971956976708/) combines computer-side conversion and Quest-side playback in one workflow. The converted result is played directly by NEX, so you don't need to choose an output format like SBS or manually copy new files to your headset.

The process is short:

1. Install and open NEX on your Meta Quest.
2. Download NEX Link from the [NEX official website](https://nexplayer.net/) on your computer.
3. Add the movie or its folder to NEX Link.
4. Right-click the movie and select "Convert to 3D."
5. Connect your computer and Quest to the same local network, open the original video in NEX's media library; after conversion, it will automatically play in 3D mode.

![User selecting a video from the NEX media panel in Meta Quest for 3D conversion](https://cms.moonvrplayer.com/uploads/nex_3d_conversion_62ea750618.png)

NEX recently expanded computer compatibility. Now Windows computers are no longer limited by chip brand; if you use a Mac, you need an Apple Silicon M-series chip and macOS 15 Sequoia or later. The entire conversion process is done locally, and your movie is not uploaded to the cloud.

Additionally, NEX offers Fast and Quality options, so you can choose according to your needs.

If your movie is already in SBS or Top-Bottom format, no conversion is needed. Just play it in NEX and select the corresponding 3D layout; if the depth seems reversed, try swapping the left and right eyes.

## Method 2: Direct Experience with Quest Gallery

The new Quest Gallery is gradually rolling out 3D viewing capability for 2D media. Its advantage is that you don't need to install a third-party player: put supported photos or videos into Gallery, open the media, and check if a 3D option appears.

However, this feature may still be affected by Quest model, system version, account, and phased rollout. If you don't see the entry in Gallery, it's not necessarily a mistake; try updating the system and Gallery, then check again. Gallery is better suited for directly opening videos that are already in it; whether it works for your content depends on the current entry and format support provided by the system.

## Method 3: Generate Exportable 3D Files with Owl3D

[Owl3D](https://www.owl3d.com/) is a 2D-to-3D tool that runs on Windows or Mac. Unlike NEX, it focuses on generating a standalone 3D video file, which can be output in formats like SBS, Top-Bottom, and MV-HEVC, then transferred to Quest or played with a compatible player.

The basic workflow is: import a 2D movie, choose SBS output suitable for Meta Quest, adjust depth and stereoscopic strength, wait for conversion to finish, then copy or stream the file to Quest. Owl3D offers more depth, pop-out, and picture configuration options, making it suitable for those willing to spend time fine-tuning effects or wanting to keep the converted result.

The trade-off is direct: an extra export and transfer step, longer processing time for long movies, and the new file takes up additional hard drive space.

How to Watch 3D Movies on Meta Quest: 3 Simple Methods

To turn Meta Quest into a private cinema, start with one simple question: where is the video? The best method depends on whether it is on a streaming service, the headset, a USB drive, a PC, or NAS.

[NEX](https://www.meta.com/experiences/nex-next-gen-video-player/25092971956976708/) is a 2D and 3D video player for Meta Quest. It can play streaming content and personal video files you are authorized to access inside a VR viewing environment.

## How to watch streaming video in NEX

Update NEX to **version 1.3.0.0 or later**, open **Browser** from the bottom toolbar, and choose a service such as YouTube, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, or Prime Video. After signing in, you can watch inside the NEX App's viewing environment. Services, catalogs, and compatibility vary by region.

## How to play local or USB videos

Local files are reliable for travel and offline viewing but use headset storage. USB files save internal space but require a compatible USB-C/OTG device, file system, and permission. In the NEX media library, choose the source, open the folder, and select the video.

## How to play movies from a PC or NAS

- **SMB**: useful for Windows shared folders and most NAS devices;
- **DLNA**: simple setup and automatic media-server discovery;
- **WebDAV**: manual connection with a server address, port, and account;
- **[NEX Link](https://nexplayer.net/)**: connects a PC library and can process 2D-to-3D conversion on supported PCs.

Connect Meta Quest and the PC or NAS to the same reachable local network. With NEX Link, first add the videos or folders you want to access on the PC.

## How to choose the correct display mode

- Regular movies and home videos: **2D** flat or curved screen;
- side-by-side pictures: **3D SBS**;
- pictures stacked vertically: **Over-Under / Top-Bottom**;
- VR180 or 360°: the projection mode that matches the source.

If the picture looks stretched, points the wrong way, or has reversed eyes, check the aspect ratio, projection, and eye order. Files with the same extension may still use different video or audio codecs.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does a 3D video appear as two pictures?

The player is probably not using SBS or Over-Under mode. Select the layout that matches the source. If the picture is combined but uncomfortable, try swapping the left and right eyes.

### Why is a PC or NAS missing, or video buffering?

Put all devices on the same local network, avoid guest Wi-Fi, and check the PC service and firewall. For high-bitrate video, connect the PC or NAS by Ethernet, use strong 5 GHz or faster Wi-Fi for Meta Quest, and pause large downloads.

### Why are external subtitles missing?

Place the subtitle beside the video, use a similar filename, and try SRT, ASS, or VTT. For network playback, make sure the player can access the subtitle path too.
